While the software makes it simple for many filers, problems start to creep in for those with more complicated returns. For example, the software doesn't automatically import W-2s from employers and requires users to manually enter their income and deductions, which can be frustrating for those who have multiple sources of income. And if you're trying to claim depreciation on rental properties, the software can be confusing and doesn't offer much feedback until you submit your returns.
In general, the platform is well-suited for confident filers who don't need a lot of hand-holding but want to file their returns as quickly and accurately as possible. The lack of a free option, however, means that other services like TurboTax and H&R Block offer a better value for those with simple returns.
With its interview-style approach, LIBERTY TAX ONLINE has a few things going for it: a clean interface and an organized layout that makes it easy to navigate the program. And while it doesn't offer the same level of automation as some competitors, it does have a helpful tool that calculates your refund or liability in real time and displays it in the upper right corner of the screen.
The company's Basic plan is a good fit for most people, as it supports the 1040 form, Schedule A, and Schedule B and covers standard deductions and interest income. Those who need more in-depth support can opt for the Deluxe online plan, which includes more forms, such as the Form 1040 Schedule C for investment income and mortgage interest. And if you have a more complex return, the Premium online plan lets you include rental property income; business deductions; unreported tips; and other nonstandard sources of income.
A nice touch is the static right sidebar that has several options for finding a local Liberty Tax office, accessing FAQs, and starting a chat session with a representative. Liberty Tax also has an email address for sending questions, though we found that it can take a while to get a response from the company's remote support team. The company does offer in-person support at one of its offices, and it also partners with a company called TaxAid to provide audit assistance for some of its customers.
